Rivian Bets Its $45K R2 SUV Can Take Down Tesla's Model Y — Starting Now

Rivian launched the R2 SUV at around $45,000, targeting Tesla Model Y buyers with a 656 hp dual-motor performance variant and plans for 20,000–25,000 units in 2026.

Rivian's Biggest Bet Yet

Rivian officially launched the R2 SUV in June 2026, with the Performance trim currently available at a starting price of approximately $45,000. The company is targeting 20,000 to 25,000 deliveries this year alone — an ambitious goal for a company that delivered just 42,247 vehicles in all of 2025, its worst year since the pandemic. The R2 is designed to go head-to-head with the Tesla Model Y, which sold more than 357,500 units in the US in 2025 and commands roughly 40% of the domestic EV market.

The stakes could not be higher. Rivian stumbled badly after the federal EV tax credit was eliminated, which removed a key incentive that had propped up demand for its pricier R1T and R1S models. The R2 represents a deliberate reset: a mid-size crossover at a lower price point, aimed at mainstream buyers who find Tesla's brand increasingly polarizing and are looking for alternatives.

What Makes the R2 Different

The R2 Performance features a dual-motor AWD setup producing a combined 656 horsepower, capable of 0–60 mph in just 3.6 seconds — performance metrics that match or exceed equivalent Tesla configurations. The interior takes heavy cues from Rivian's existing vehicles, featuring the company's driver display system and a focus on outdoor-oriented utility without the premium pricing of the R1S.

CNBC noted that Rivian's CEO RJ Scaringe sees the R2 as the vehicle that could transform Rivian the same way the Model 3 transformed Tesla — moving from a premium automaker serving a narrow audience into one that reaches mass-market scale. Rivian has pulled forward the R2's production timeline from late 2027 to the current date, a move that signals urgency in reaching profitability before its Georgia manufacturing facility comes online in 2028.

Can Rivian Actually Scale?

Skeptics remain. Some analysts warn that Rivian's 2026 sales could be "dreadful" unless the R2 resonates strongly with buyers beyond the enthusiast core. The company's current manufacturing is concentrated at its Normal, Illinois plant, which has limited throughput capacity at the volumes needed to compete with Tesla's Gigafactory output. The R2 must work — Rivian's path to profitability runs directly through it.
